- Beach lovers are spoiled in Sierra Leone. River No. 2 Beach, just outside Freetown, is considered to be one of the best beaches in Africa. Find yourself in the middle of nowhere surrounded by white sand and lush mountains. You’ll also fall in love with the dolce vita in Sussex Beach and the palm trees and the charming little villages around Tokeh Beach. To hit the best waves, head south to Bureh or go to Mama Beach to admire colourful fishing boats. - Electric sockets: Mostly British plugs, but you can also find some European ones. Best to bring an adaptor.
- Travel information: A passport is mandatory whatever the reason for your stay or its length. In addition, you will need a visa to enter the country.
- Vaccination: The only mandatory vaccination is Yellow Fever.
Dos and don'ts in Freetown
- You can be relaxed in Sierra Leone, but avoid walking at night on the city beaches.
- If you rent a car, don't drive outside Freetown after dark. Most roads in Freetown and outside are unlit.
- Sierra Leone is predominantly Muslim, so make sure you adapt your behaviour.
- Members of the LGBTI community should take care when travelling to Sierra Leone.
- Bargaining is a must whatever you are trying to purchase, except in restaurants where the price is on the menu.
- A nice way to ride downtown is by Keke (similar to an Indian rickshaw/tuk-tuk): they arrived in Sierra Leone this year and are becoming very popular!
- The official language of Sierra Leone is English but there are 23 living languages in the country. Krio is the most widely spoken language.

Any time from November to March is the best time to visit the country. Preferably avoid the rainy season from June to September.
What to eat in Sierra Leone?
- Among the local specialties: foofoo (served with bitter leaves), cassava leaves with rice and groundnut soup with rice.
- It’s quite easy to buy and eat all kinds of fresh and delicious seafood, especially lobsters, shrimps of all sizes and oysters.
- There is a big Lebanese community in Freetown and therefore a wide range of good Lebanese restaurants. Enjoy!
- You are strongly advised to use bottled water only, and not water from the tap because it isn’t drinkable.
