What to do in Zakynthos?

1. The Keri Lighthouse is the ideal backdrop for a photo. The beautiful view at sunsets from atop these cliffs will take your breath away!
   
   
2. The Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa is probably the most beautiful monastery on the island. This picturesque little monument perched on a mountain is an astonishing sight. If you have not had your fill of religious monuments, you can also visit the Anafonitria Monastery, a small monastery full of charm. Inside are splendid frescoes and a statue of the Virgin that are still well preserved. Keep in mind that for conservation reasons, no photography is allowed inside.
   
   
3. Agiou Markou Square is a lovely spot to spend an afternoon in the sun. This small square surrounded by delightful bars and restaurants is the perfect location for a break while sightseeing.
   
   
4. Of course, there are many beaches and caves in Zakynthos that you won’t want to miss. At the top of the list is Porto Limnionas Cove. With its enchanting turquoise water and white sand, time seems to stand still. What’s more, there is a little cave that’s great for watching fish. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel and mask! Navagio Beach is also a must. Widely considered the prettiest spot on the island of Zakynthos, it boasts a magnificent shipwreck in the middle of a golden sandy beach and a white cliff rising nearly 300 m high!

Practical information for your trip to Zakynthos

• Brussels Airlines flights arrive and depart from Zakynthos International Airport "Dionysios Solomos", located 6 Km south of Zakynthos town and 1 km from the famous resort of Laganas.
• Currency: Euro. Make sure to always have some cash on hand as not all restaurants accept credit cards. ATMs are available throughout the country.
• Electric sockets: Plug type C and type F (two round pins) suitable for appliances of 230 V – 50 Hz.
• Travel information: Greece is part of the Schengen-zone, meaning that under normal circumstances, EU citizens may travel without a passport. Non-EU citizens must have a valid passport. Citizens of the following countries may enter Greece without a visa: Countries of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Citizens of other countries require a visa.
• Vaccination: No vaccinations are necessary to visit Greece.

What to do and not do in Zakynthos?

• Be careful if you’re swimming on the north side of the island after 4 PM because the wind gets very strong and it can be dangerous for swimmers.

A few words of Greek

• Kalimera is the usual greeting in the morning, if you’re greeting someone in the afternoon or evening, say kalispera. Goodnight is kalinikta, do pay attention though as kalinikta is only used as a goodbye, never as a greeting. Going for drinks with friends? The Greeks don’t say cheers but yamas! Want to go out? Say Pame gia café. It literally means “Let’s go for a coffee” but it’s generally used to go out for drinks, not specifically coffee. If you have a particular Greek lady or gentleman in mind, this is the way to ask them out for a drink.

Cultural events in Zakynthos

• Feast of Saint Dionysios: during this festival, you can sing, dance and eat together with the locals in honour of the island’s patron saint, Dionysios of Zakynthos. The day ends with a spectacular fireworks show. The stuff that dreams are made of!
• Holy Week is absolutely not to be missed. It is considered unique and unforgettable by the locals and tourists alike. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the procession of Christ and to celebrate with the locals who wear traditional clothing for the occasion.

When to go to Zakynthos?

Zakynthos has a Mediterranean climate. This means that summers are long and hot and winters are mild, with some rain. In short, whatever time of year you visit, you can be sure the weather will be fine. Don’t forget your sunscreen and sunglasses!

The best times to visit Zakynthos are from May to June and September to October. You’ll find weather that’s neither too hot nor too cold and water temperatures perfect for swimming. What’s more, it’s not overly crowded with tourists during these periods.
