Burundi, officially known as the Republic of Burundi, is a colourful country located in the African Great Lakes region. It is bordered by Rwanda on the north, Tanzania on the south and east and the Democratic Republic of Congo on the west. Much of its west border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika. The land has an equatorial climate and its economy is mostly based on agriculture and pasture.

Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, is located on the shores of the magnificent Lake Tanganyika, which is almost the oldest and deepest lake in the world. With an estimated population of 300,000 inhabitants, Bujumbura is the busy administrative, communications and economic centre and Burundi’s main harbour.
